This hands-on workshop explores animation created via cell phone using a free animation app. After a short introductory tutorial, workshop participants dive right in and create animated works by cell phone. Working in groups using Pixilation (a stop motion technique where live actors are used as a frame-by-frame subject of an animation) participants repeatedly pose while a frame is taken and change poses slightly before each of the next frames – the actor becomes a living stop action puppet! Norman McLaren's famous Academy Award winning stop action animation, Neighbors, 1952 and Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer, 1986 will serve as examples of the Pixilation technique.
